Car Co-op Membership

What does it cost to join?

Because we're a not-for-profit co-operative and our members are owners, we seek to offer the best possible value for car sharing.  To become a member of The Car Co-op, an individual makes a one-time, refundable $500 share purchase and pays a $20 registration fee.  The second person in the household can join as an associate member for a $250 share purchase.

How much does it cost to use a car?

The Car Co-op's Member Plan charges (per booking):

• $3.00 per hour (to a maximum of $36 daily), with no hourly charge between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
• 40¢ per kilometre for the first 35km,
  25¢ for each additional kilometre up to 150km,
  15¢ per kilometre thereafter
• $2 administration fee for each of the first three bookings of the month; the most you'll pay in admin fees in one month is $6

And if you don't use a Co-op car in a month, you pay nothing!  Our Zero-on-Zero price point gives you the flexibility you need without a concern about cost.

Taking a longer trip?

We no longer have a minimum distance requirement!  Apply the same Member Rates above to your trips to the Island, the Interior, or wherever you want to go.  If you're curious how much a long trip will cost, check out our Trip Cost Calculator — and don't forget that Car Co-op members also receive discounted rates at select rental agencies.

Fuel Fluctuation Adjustment

To adapt to varying gas prices, each month we add a small charge per kilometre you drive — just enough to cover that month's gas costs.  FFA is now included in km rates until gas costs more than $1.10 per litre.  This charge is the same for all price points, and is calculated based on the average fuel efficiency of our fleet.

$1 membership fee

To comply with our insurance requirements, all accounts will be charged $1 membership fee on October 1 each year.

Keep in mind — all insurance, fuel, cleaning, maintenance, BCAA Membership, plus permanent & permit parking are included in our prices.  All of our drivers have access to a 15% transit pass discount through The Car Co-op, and shareholding members get access to a variety of discounts at two different rental agencies.
